Recommendation #1

The Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson recommends that the CRA perform a comprehensive review of its content on Canada.ca, including its web page architecture and content, to remove redundant information and to make sure the information it provides is relevant, clear, concise and easy to find. It should complete this review by spring 2026 and start implementing changes by fall 2026.

The CRA agrees with this recommendation in principle.

CRA’s action plan

The CRA is initiating a graduated review of its web page architecture on Canada.ca, to remove any redundant and/or outdated information, and ensuring the remaining content is relevant and easier to find. The goal is to improve the overall user experience for those engaging with the CRA online.

The review will be complete in Spring 2026 and cycles of implementation will begin in Fall 2026.

Recommendation #2

The Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson recommends that the CRA provide a permanently funded grant program for organizations participating in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program and the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program to support their free tax clinics for eligible taxpayers and help them offset operating costs.

The CRA agrees with this recommendation in principle.

CRA’s action plan

The CRA acknowledges the success of its Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) Grant pilot, and although we are in a time of fiscal restraint, we remain committed to providing support for people to do their taxes.

In February 2025, the CRA was pleased to announce that the grant was extended for a fifth year. Funding of $4.2M was allocated to support local community organizations for fiscal 2025-2026.

Applications for the CVITP Grant will be accepted from May 1, 2025 until June 30, 2025.
