Narrator: Welcome to a walkthrough of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) volunteer training website.

Narrator: This online training is a resource designed to help new and returning CVITP volunteers. The training site is grouped into eight topics [rectangle callouts surround the thumbnails]. We strongly encourage new CVITP volunteers to review the entire training website before they start preparing tax returns.
Narrator: If you are a new volunteer, the recommended order to read through the topics is [rectangle callouts surround the thumbnails of each topic]: Before you begin, Income tax basic concepts, UFile overview, Preparing income tax returns: before, during, and after, Auto-fill my return (if applicable), Frequent client scenarios and Resources.
If you are a returning volunteer, we encourage you to review the topics Overview of what's new and Resources. However, you can always benefit from reviewing the entire online training.

Narrator: Next, let’s click on the link Auto-fill my return [pointer clicks on link].

Narrator: The training for Auto-fill my return, also known as AFR, has been divided into four pages ‒ one for each of the topics [rectangle callouts surround the link of each topic] : Before you begin, How to use Auto-fill my return, Troubleshooting and Represent a Client. Check the Troubleshooting page for help with the most common AFR errors that volunteers encounter.

Narrator: Next, let’s click on the link Frequent client scenarios [pointer clicks on link].

Narrator: At the top of the page are examples of the two alert types that can be found throughout the training site [rectangle callout surrounds the alert]. The orange alert warning icon is for important notes. The blue “alert info” icon is for important information.
Further down on this page are listed the most common scenarios that you may encounter as a volunteer. These scenarios have detailed information to help you prepare tax returns for specific clienteles. Let’s visit the page with the scenarios for Adults 65 years and older [pointer clicks on link].

Narrator: On this page you’ll find helpful links, contacts, forms, and other information that may be useful when volunteering at a free tax clinic. There are six tabs. The first tab, Helpful links [pointer clicks on tab], lists Canada.ca web pages where you can find information on benefits. There are also tools such as manuals, calculators, and guides.
The second tab, Helpful contacts [pointer clicks on tab], lists available telephone support lines.
The third tab, Provincial and territorial benefits and credits [pointer clicks on tab], lists the Canada.ca web pages with more information on benefits and credits specific to your province or territory.
The fourth tab, T1 lines comparison tables (before 2019 – since 2019) [pointer clicks on tab], has the most commonly used lines when preparing CVITP returns.
The fifth tab, Useful forms [pointer clicks on tab], lists the forms most commonly used when preparing returns for the CVITP.
The sixth and final tab, Job aids and factsheets [pointer clicks on tab], lists some helpful job aids, factsheets, and questions and answers documents you can refer to when hosting or volunteering at a free tax clinic.

Narrator: Further down on this page [scrolling to the middle of the homepage] is the important note CVITP Virtual clinics - Guidelines and resources for volunteers [rectangle callout surrounds the alert]. If you are a volunteer participating in the temporary virtual clinic initiative, we strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the guidelines that apply to your situation before preparing an individual’s tax return.
The guidelines [rectangle callouts surround each link to the guidelines] are for clinics that use video conferencing, telephone and CVITP modified drop-off clinics.

This training refers to software exclusive to the CVITP program that is not available to Canadians. Please remember not to share this website with anyone outside of CVITP volunteers and organizations.
