Educators – Tax Resources and Financial Literacy

Educator-led programs

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers two free educator-led products that are easy to teach and understand.

Teaching Taxes

This product teaches the basics of taxation and promotes financial literacy.

  • uses pedagogical approaches to promote and develop critical thinking
  • 180 minutes of in‑class instruction and student exercises
  • use it in economics, accounting, business, mathematics, consumer education, social studies, and second language courses

Why use Teaching Taxes?

Students will:

  • increase their understanding of Canada’s tax system
  • learn about the relationship between working and paying taxes
  • gain the real-life skill of completing a simple tax return

Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System

This product explores the relationship between income taxes and Canadians’ quality of life.

  • meets a wide range of teaching and learning preferences
  • choose and customize from 180 minutes of in‑class instruction and student exercises
  • use it alone or as an introduction to Teaching Taxes

Why use Responsible Citizenship and Canada’s Tax System?

Students will:

  • examine where their tax dollars go
  • learn about their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers
  • learn about the underground economy, its impact on our society, and how it affects them personally

Self-teaching program

Learning About Taxes

The CRA offers one free self‑teaching product.

This online product is designed for anyone to use. It takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

  • introduces you to Canada’s tax system
  • teaches you how to complete a simple tax return
  • self‑paced learning modules
