Hello, my name is Marie Julie.

Welcome to the overview of the ITAVP learning guide. This is a resource designed to help new and returning ITAVP volunteers prepare tax returns for eligible individuals.
The ITAVP Learning Guide has seven sections [callout surrounds the section]:

- Get ready to volunteer
- Reminder of best practices during tax preparation
- Tax guide for volunteers
- Tax considerations for Newcomers and Indigenous peoples
- Installing the tax software and its functions

We strongly encourage ITAVP volunteers to review the entire learning guide before starting to prepare income tax returns.

It is also important to note that many terms specific to the income tax assistance program and tax filing are found in this learning guide.
You can access the definition of several of these terms by clicking on their hyperlinks.

Narrator: This section provides you with all the tax concepts and information on the types of income, deductions and credits most frequently encountered when filing income tax returns as part of the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program. Here, you’ll find step-by-step instructions on how to enter various situations into the tax calculation software.
Let’s look at this section in more detail.
Narrator: Click on the Basic tax concepts subsection [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link]. This subsection provides basic tax return information including:

On this page, you will find the definitions for each marital status found in the federal and Quebec income tax returns [callout surrounds the options]. Examples of the different types of marital status are also provided at the end of the subsection. [callout surrounds the option]

This page provides a complete index of all tax topics related to the income tax assistance program and allows you to filter the information in two ways:
- by choosing one of the radio buttons in the Filter by topic list [callout surrounds the radio buttons].
- by entering a term or sentence in the Filter items textbox above the table. [callout surrounds the field and arrow points to it]
The filtering options in the list of topics are based on the various clienteles served by the income tax assistance program, including newcomers, seniors and students. [radio buttons for each option is selected and arrows point to them one at a time]
Narrator: Select one of the topics from the list to access the information. Click on the Reset filter button to clear the filter or sorting options before starting a new search. [callout surrounds the button and arrow points to it]
Click on one of the arrows at the top of each column of the table to reorganize the entire list or data in ascending or descending alphabetical order. [arrows point to each column]

So far, we’ve showed you how to filter and access tax information on the Find a tax topic page.
You could also access the same tax information, without using the Find a tax topic page, through the following two sections:
- Types of income, deductions and tax credits. [callout surrounds the section]
- UFile instructions by tax situation. [callout surrounds the section]
Let’s look at these sections in more detail.
First, click on Types of income, deductions and tax credits [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link]. Then, click on any link in this section to access a complete list of tax topics related to the income tax assistance program, such as income, credits, deductions and other items. This subsection will allow you to select the options applicable to the tax situation for which you are preparing a tax return in order to obtain only the relevant screen-by-screen instructions. To access the instructions, click on the title of the tax situation you need. [arrows point to each options]

The Tax considerations for Newcomers and Indigenous peoples section was created specifically for these two groups, given that they often have unique filing requirements. [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link]

This section was designed to help you install, set up and use the tax calculation software provided as part of the Income Tax Assistance –Volunteer Program.
Each of the subsections explains the various functions of the software. [arrows point to each section]

The CRA and Revenu Québec electronic services section [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link opening the landing page] contains information and instructions that will allow you to use approved electronic services from the CRA and Revenu Québec such as EFILE, NetFile Québec, the CRA’s Auto-fill my return service, the Revenu Québec tax data download service, and others. The learning guide also contains a Resources section at the bottom of the home page [callout surrounds the section], which combines the many tools available to help you prepare income tax returns.
Let’s look at the Practice with case studies page. [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link]

This subsection includes all the information and tax slips for the different case studies available.
These case studies will allow you to practice filling out tax returns based on various situations that are often encountered in the of Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program.

Each case study begins with a Test your knowledge section where you are asked one or more questions to assess your knowledge of the topic at hand. [callout surrounds the section]
This is followed by instructions on how to complete the case study using the UFile CVITP software, as well as general information and additional details. [scrolling down to the topic, callout surrounds the sections]
Once you’ve completed the case study, confirm your results by clicking on the link(s) in the Solution section of the page [scrolling down to the topic, callout surrounds the section]. A summary of the return will open in PDF format.

The forms, job aids and fact sheets subsection [callout surrounds the section, cursor clicks on the link and opens forms, job aids and fact sheets landing page], combines forms and other documents that you may need when preparing income tax returns, as well as different job aids applicable to various clients.

- references for ordering forms
- confidential telephone lines reserved for volunteers
