CRA Sustainable Development Strategy
Overview of the Federal Government's Approach to Sustainable Development
The Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) 2013-16 presents the Government of Canada's sustainable development activities, as required by the Federal Sustainable Development Act. In keeping with the objectives of the Act to make environmental decision-making more transparent and accountable to Parliament, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) supports FSDS through the activities in this supplementary information table.
This CRA Sustainable Development Strategy presents the results for Theme IV – Shrinking the Environmental Footprint – Beginning with Government.

Additional CRA Sustainable Development Activities and Initiatives
Reducing CRA's footprint
The CRA continued to optimise its office accommodations—one of the Agency's larger expenditures—through the implementation of Workplace 2.0 and other space saving initiatives while meeting employee needs. During the 2014-15 fiscal year, the CRA reduced its occupied space by 5.4% (or nearly 50,000 m2) of the total space occupied by the Agency.
Sustainable Development Management System
The CRA monitors and manages progress on its sustainable development strategy by implementing the activities in its sustainable development national action plan. The heads of planning in each branch report semi-annually on the implementation of their SD activities, and the SD Centre of Expertise produces a summary progress report for all of the CRA's SD activities at the end of each fiscal year. The SD activities are comparable to FSDS implementation strategies. Implementing the CRA's SD activities leads to achieving its SD targets and represents its contribution to the related FSDS targets.
Strategic Environmental Assessment
During the 2014-15 reporting cycle, the CRA considered the environmental effects of initiatives subject to the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals as part of its decision-making processes. As the CRA did not develop any initiatives that needed a strategic environmental assessment, it did not produce any related public statements.
