About Non-Resident Withholding Tax
Non-Resident Withholding Tax is an online portal in your CRA account that lets non-resident tax account holders view and update their information. This account is used to remit Part XIII tax withheld on amounts paid or credited to non-residents of Canada.

Who can use Non-Resident Withholding Tax
Individuals or business owners (including partners, directors, and officers) who hold a non-resident tax account (account number format NRX123456) and who have registered for a CRA account can use this portal.
Signing in on behalf of someone else
If you want to access Non-Resident Withholding Tax on behalf of someone else (including friends and family members), you must be their authorized representative and use Represent a Client from your CRA account.
How to access Non-Resident Withholding Tax
To access the Non-Resident Withholding Tax portal for the first time, you must have a non-resident tax account number (NR number).
To get the account number required to add the Non-Resident Withholding Tax portal:
- Sign in to your CRA account
- Select either your Individual, Business, or Representative account
- Select Open a non-resident tax account from the “More Services” menu
- Follow the instructions to provide all the required information
After confirming your information, you will receive a 9-digit non-resident tax account number.
The fastest and easiest way to open a non-resident tax account is online. If you can’t do it online, you can request an account be opened by phone or mail.

Once you have your non-resident tax account number:
- Sign in to your CRA account
- From the Welcome page, select Add account
- Select Non-resident tax account
- Enter your 9-digit non-resident tax account number
- After getting your confirmation, return to the Welcome page and select your Non-resident tax account to access the Non-Resident Withholding Tax portal

- Manage address
- Manage phone number
- View remitting requirements
- Provide a nil remittance
- View and pay account balance
- View mail
- Manage authorized representatives

What's new
Backup multi-factor authentication option
The CRA has introduced a backup multi-factor authentication (MFA) option requirement for your CRA account. If you don’t already have one, you will be asked to add a backup MFA option the next time you sign in. Backup options include either a passcode grid or a third-party authenticator app. You will be able to skip this step.
New digital services
New services have been added including the ability to submit documents and file an NR4 online.
