SimpleFile Digital – Personal income tax

You may be looking for:

SimpleFile Digital is a free online service that eligible individuals can use to file their income tax and benefit return, with or without an invitation. When using this filing method, you only need to answer a series of quick questions. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses your answers, plus the information the CRA has on file, to complete and process a tax return for you.

SimpleFile Digital is available to eligible individuals with a simple tax situation. You may be able to use this filing method with or without an invitation from the CRA.

  1. SimpleFile invitation

    You did not get an invitation from the CRA

    You may be able to use SimpleFile Digital if you have a simple tax situation.

    If you did not receive a SimpleFile invitation package, you can determine if you are eligible to use the service.

    You got an invitation from the CRA

    The CRA sends SimpleFile invitation packages to certain eligible individuals.

    Where to find your invitation

    Delivery through CRA account

    If you are registered to receive email notifications, you will receive an email when your SimpleFile invitation package is available to view in your CRA account.

    If you have access to a CRA account, but are not registered for email notifications, you can still view your invitation package in your CRA account.

    Delivery by mail

    SimpleFile invitation packages are sent to the mailing address we have on file, if you are not registered to receive email notifications.


    If you received a SimpleFile invitation package, and there have been no changes to your personal information, proceed to locating your access code.

  2. Determine your eligibility

    You must meet all of the following criteria in order to use this service:

    • You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes from January 1 to December 31, 2025
    • You do not have exemptDigital requires you to have an access income under the Indian Act
    • You either have no income, or your income is limited to specific income sources and below a specific amount Allowed incomes sources

      Income limits

      The income limit depends on:

      • Which province or territory you lived in on December 31, 2025
      • Your age on December 31, 2025
      • Whether you qualify to receive the disability tax credit (DTC)
      • Your income source as the following are not included
        • T4A (OAS), Net federal supplements, including the guaranteed income supplement (GIS)
        • T5007, Social assistance payments, income assistance payments or workers' compensation benefits

    Claiming your benefits, credits, and deductions

    Only certain benefits, credits, and deductions can be claimed. Some deductions such as medical expenses and tuition expenses are not supported when using SimpleFile Digital.

  3. Locate your access code

    SimpleFile Digital requires you to have an access code. There are 2 ways locate it depending on your situation.

    • On your 2024 tax notice of assessment (NOA)

      Where to find the access code on your NOA

      Your unique 8-character access code is located on the right side of your previous year’s notice of assessment (NOA).

    • On your 2025 SimpleFile invitation

      Where to find the access code on your invitation

      Your unique 8-character access code may be located in the "Option A: SimpleFile Digital" section of your letter.

      On your invitation letter, the access code is referred to as the validation code.

  4. Get your information ready

    Before you use SimpleFile Digital, you will need your:

    • Social insurance number (SIN)
    • Date of birth
    • Mailing address
    • Spouse’s SIN and net income, if married or common-law
    • Access code
  5. File using the SimpleFile Digital web form

    With SimpleFile Digital, there are no forms to fill out or calculations for you to do.

    The service is available daily from:

    • March 9, 2026 to January 31, 2027
    • 6 am to 3 am (ET)


    Disclaimer for using the web form

    If you make a mistake while using the SimpleFile Digital service, you can close the session at any time before submitting your information and you can choose to start from the beginning again.

    If you choose to close the session before submitting your information, all information provided up to that point will not be saved, and your return will not be completed and filed.

    SimpleFile Digital web form

    • All residents (except Quebec)

      Both the federal tax return and provincial or territory forms are filed.

    • Quebec residents

      Only the federal tax return is filed. You will still need to complete and submit a Quebec provincial income tax return with Revenu Québec.

After you file

The CRA will send you a notice of assessment (NOA) with the outcome of your tax return. Keep your supporting documents for 6 years in case the CRA asks to see them.
